It’s common for many couples to face tough challenges during their marriage. Some of these include infidelity, finances, or children. But if you’re dealing with a toxic mother-in-law, it can be even more difficult. Fortunately, there are ways to save your marriage.

1. Overbearing Mothers-in-Law

If your mother-in-law is overbearing, she may try to take center stage in your conversations and steer the discussion toward her own needs and wants. She may also impose her expectations on your spouse and children.

She may want to be the “favorite” family member and spend time with you and your kids.

This can make it difficult to have meaningful relationships with your husband or children. She might sabotage your marriage by constantly criticizing you, making you feel unloved or ignored.

2. Dominating Mothers-in-Law

A domineering mother-in-law has an inflated sense of confidence and insists on being right. Her advice is often given out with a strong “should” and she may be quite vocal about her desire for you to follow it without question.

3. Toxic Mothers-in-Law

A toxic mother-in-law is a woman who has developed negative feelings about you because of her own insecurities and/or experiences growing up with her mother-in-law. She might use her influence and power to push your spouse away or cause him to become envious of you.

4. Toxic Mothers-in-Law are Unkind and Disrespectful to You

A woman’s relationship with her mother-in-law can be a defining factor in her life. If she feels that you are not kind and respectful to her, she can easily begin to develop a grudge against you and your marriage.

5. Toxic Mothers-in-Law Badmouth You to Their Friends and Family

A toxic Mother-in-Law is often an invasive and controlling person. She snoops around your house, talks behind your back, and tries to pass gossip about you on to her friends.

She might also call you by your husband’s name or the names of her child’s ex-partner, and try to cause a rift between you and your spouse.

If you are dealing with a toxic mother-in-law, your best option is to distance yourself from her and work on repairing your relationship with your husband. If you are able to do that, you may find it easier to avoid these types of behaviors in the future.

6. Mother-in-Laws Force Their Children To Take Sides

Sometimes, a toxic mother-in-law will push your partner to take her side in any conflict. She knows that if her child takes her side, she’ll have an easy way to destroy the relationship between you two.

7. A Toxic Mother-in-Law Can Turn Your Husband Against You

A toxic Mother-in-Law can turn your husband against you by constantly criticizing him or trying to get him to change his opinions about you. She can also try to make him jealous by bringing up her own problems with you.

If your mother-in-law is causing you to feel depressed, it might be helpful to seek help from a counselor or other professional who can provide you with coping skills. It is essential to protect yourself from these toxic individuals who can cause a lot of stress on your marriage.
